This Word of the Week is in honor of our own Dan Hazlett, who will soon join us in Rootstock with his musings on the natural world.

Incorrect: Canadian goose.

Although this beautiful but aggressive bird rarely carries a passport and is not tied by vow or law as citizen of any country, its determination to defend any piece of wetland (or dryland) deemed worthwhile, makes it an excellent candidate for conscript in the defense forces of our neighbors to the north, eh?

Correct: Canada goose.

It’s the given name, signifying the place this bird loves to hang out in summer, reserving the right to fly south when the season beckons.
