In a day and age when arts programs are being de-funded in public schools, the youth of America aren’t giving up on creativity and self-expression. Last year, a group of students attending the EELEF after school program in Spring Valley, New York took it upon themselves to keep the arts alive by creating their very own film festival. Carrying all responsibility to make it a success – from community outreach to graphic design to presenting at the festival – the students blew away the expectations of any adults who were watching when submissions streamed in from six continents! Thus the Rockland Youth Film Festival (RYFF) was born as a worldwide force in youth film-making. Check out the first year’s international award winners featured on the RYFF website. With success in their back pockets and no limitations in mind, the students have every intention of making the festival even more successful and far-reaching in its second year, and they’re taking the opportunity to call attention to the issues they deem important.
