Diego here, with FrogTV. Crazy stuff is happening in our world. In this episode, I hosted an out-of-the-ordinary body building contest whose top contestants are GMO Superweeds. Superweeds are the unintended consequence of genetically engineered crops gone out of control, and a certain very dangerous weedkiller is being used more and more these days, thanks to crops becoming resistant to glyphosate (or Roundup) due to overuse.
This new weedkiller is not new at all—it’s called 2,4-D and is an ingredient in Agent Orange, the defoliant used in the Vietnam War which caused death, deformities and genetic mutations that have been passed on in children of those exposed. It’s highly volatile (meaning, if it’s not sprayed in just the right conditions, then it will turn into a fog that travels with the wind, coating everything it touches. This volatility means 2,4-D is a risk to other broadleaf crops, like grapes and tomatoes—two high-value crops for farmers and important foods for us.
What to do, oh what to do? Sure, the problems can seem so big that it feels like there’s nothing we can do. But if a little three-eyed frog can stand up to make a difference, then so can you. Go here to find some simple things you can do to spread the word.
